I have purchased 2 Dell XPS18 computers, have upgraded them from Windows 8.1 to 8.1 Pro, and I'm having the exact same issue with both of these computers when trying to connect to the Netgear PTV3000 Wi-Di device.
One computer has i5 the other has an i7-3537u processor, and both use the Intel HD4000 video display adaptor.
The Dell web site claims the XPS18 comes with "Intel 2230 Combo w Wi-Di Intel Wireless Display WiDi BT4.0 (via WiFi mini card).
I have updated the intel video driver, as well as all the other intel devices using the Intel updating tool. Everything is up to date.
When I go to use the charms, I click on "Devices - Project -" and then there is no option for "add device". As many others have stated, it only asks if I want to "duplicate, extend, etc", as if I was already connected to an external display. If I try and pick "duplicate" it does nothing.
I have tried to add it as a "device" but it never found the Netgear device on the network.
I've updated the firmware on the Netgear WiDi device, and spent an hour on the phone with Netgear tech support. They don't have a solution.
I tested the connection using a new Dell Precision 3800 running Windows 7 Pro 64 bit, and it connected to the Netgear flawlessly.
This would appear to be an Intel / Windows 8.1 problem.
Intel / Microsoft, please provide a solution to this problem quickly, as the XPS18, which I like, has one flaw: no external video display port of any kind. Without WiDi, I can't connect to a larger monitor for presentations.
